Double page spread second draft and feedback
Second draft Double page spread
This is my second draft which I
started my first design on Photoshop of my double page spread.
Feedback:
v The main image
needs to be a lot bigger to ensure that this is the main element within the
double page spread.
v Ensure the
strapline placed underneath the headline can clearly be seen. This is to ensure
this stands out and emphasises that this is Lydia’s story.
v Ensure that the
double page spread is exciting and stands out, for example may be add some more
colour.
v Add some more
quotes from Lydia to make sure that readers know that this is an exclusive
interview with Lydia.
Contents page second draft and feedback
Second draft contents page
This is my second draft which I
started my first design on Photoshop of my contents page.
Feedback:
v The main image to
the left of the page suites the contents page extremely well and the size is
appropriate for the page. However, this may be better if another picture was
added to make the page more exciting. Also this may improve the blank space at
the bottom of the page.
v The plain black
box is not necessary for the page and there seems to be no actual purpose for
it.
v It is good that
there isn’t a lot of text but there is clearly enough to show all the pages
within the story. Also having the pages number in red ensures that the reader
will know where to go to read that particular information.
v The headline may
need to be slightly bigger to ensure that this page stands out.
Front cover second draft and feedback
Second draft Front cover
This is my second draft which I
started my first design on Photoshop of my front cover.
Feedback:
v The main image
works well within the front cover. This should stay the same when creating the
final draft.
v However there is
no evidence that your magazine has been given a price, so ensure that the price
is on the magazine. This will ensure the magazine is professional and includes
all elements and conventions as does other magazines.
v Make the cover line quote bigger, this is to ensure
that the main story ill stand out.
v A suggestion-Turn
the “exclusive” to the side this will ensure that everything is not just
straight and this may add an element of fun to my magazine.

Contents page first draft and feedback
This is the first draft on paper for the contents page of my magazine. I had to do a front cover before I started to design on photo shop to ensure I had an understanding of where I wanted different elements of the contents page were going to be placed. This would help to ensure that I include everything I wanted and all conventions that should be on the contents page. From researching other music magazine, I had to ensure that in my own magazine I included:
·
A headline
·
Page numbers that are clear
·
Straplines of the stories
which are going to be throughout the magazine
·
Image that will grab the
attention of readers
·
Ensure that the layout will
look right when the magazine is produced on Photoshop.
Whilst doing this I had to gain some knowledge on the colour scheme I want on my magazine, were everything is going to be situated, how I want my images to be edited and placed on the contents page.
From producing this draft I have gained some understanding as to how I want my contents page to look and where I want all to be positioned.

Front cover first draft and feedback
This the first drafts on paper for the front cover of my magazine. I chose to do a draft to gain some knowledge as to how I should layout all the different requirements within a magazine. This would also help to see how my magazine should actually look when it is printed. This is because I need to be able to understand where potential readers may look when buying a magazine. When doing this I also, researched many other magazine front covers including “Q” “Billboard” “Vibe”, this is to ensure I understand how other well-known magazines design and layout their magazine covers. From this I was able to gain some knowledge as to how I would like my magazine to look, where all the conventions will be placed and to see if this would work accordingly to the requirements.
From this research I have decided to include many different conventions within my magazine, these include:
·
Masthead: This will be at the top of the page in big fonts.
·
Strapline: Situated underneath the Masthead.
·
Logo
·
3 cover lines: These will be situated to the left of the page.
·
Lure: This will be situated underneath the cover lines to show an
insight to what is going to be inside the magazine.
·
An exclusive: This will be situated at the bottom of the page to
show that my magazine is the only one who is showing that story.
·
A kicker: This will be situated at the bottom right of the page.
·
A barcode/ Price this will be placed at the bottom right of the
page to ensure that this follows the rules and conventions of a magazine cover.
·
Main image: This will be to the right-centre of the page and will
take the majority of it up.
When doing my front cover, the first important part of the magazine is the Masthead this is to ensure that potential readers know what magazine they are reading. I then put a strapline underneath the masthead this is because readers will need to be aware of what the main story is inside the magazine. I then put 3 cover lines which are situated to the left of the page, these will tell the main stories which are going to be inside the magazine. This will have to stand out from the rest of the magazine, so I may decide to make them a different colour font or just a larger font. There will be a lure situated underneath the cover lines to ensure that the page is neatly laid out and readers can read the magazine easily. The main image will take the majority of the page up which will be situated to the right of the page. This image will link to the main story which is going to be inside the magazine. The barcode and price will be situated at the bottom right of the page to ensure that viewers can see the price and this follows the conventions of a magazine.
Feedback:
v
The image on the front cover needs to be bigger to
ensure that it stands out on the page. This will ensure that the readers are
attracted.
v
Make the headlines and title bigger as these
particular bits of writing will need to stand out on the page.
v
Make the exclusive bigger on the page.
Barcode
Within my research of magazine front cover, it is
clear that on every front cover there is a “barcode” this is an extremely
important element within my magazine. This barcode allows those who are selling
the magazine to be scanned which will then allow this to show how many have
been sold, how many are left within the shop, this then would show whether a
magazine was selling or not selling.
From this I know that adding a barcode is an important element to add to
the front cover of my page.

Mood board
The image situated below is a mood board in which would help me with different examples of what famous magazine producers do such as using a range of different images, titles, headlines and poses from , put my mood board together from using a number of different magazine front covers. Through doing this I was able to find many different example s of text which I could incorporate into my magazine. From this I learnt that the background colour of each image reflects what colour the text will be. For example most dull background colours such as greys and blacks have red as the colour of their text. I also particularly like “Billboards” headline and logo; this is because when this is seen it is instantly recognised as Billboard which shows that they have made a brand name for themselves which means they are now extremely popular. The headline is extremely important to a magazine as the magazine will be instantly recognised by this, “Q” magazine have used white text over a red background. The Q is the largest text on the magazine which follows the conventions of a magazine. From doing this I also learnt a lot about some poses used, I have learnt that magazine who like to show expression, use a close up shot which draws attraction to the eyes of the model. This could suggest that most magazine companies like having the image of their model bigger that anything else on the page this could be because they want to portray that the model has dominance. From having a range of different parts of a magazine cover it is extremely clear that clothing on a model is extremely important this is because, within the “ Q” magazine with Madonna the inside story is serious this is why she is dressed in black this could suggests that the colours mean something as black means “ Sadness”. This is an example of magazines using colour schemes. This has given me an incite of what colours go together, different background colours that work and poses used to create effects throughout.

6) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
6) What have you learnt
about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
I have learnt how to use
photo shop in a more in depth way for example cropping and shading some photos
which lead me to the final images used on the front cover of the magazine. I
have also learnt how to blog different sections of the magazine which helps to
show how I created the final product.
5) How did you attract/address your audience?
5) How did you
attract/address your audience?
This is represented in
my media product through the use of images, text and font colours. The images
used represent Sacred Heart High School; this is to ensure that when pupils
read the magazine they can relate to it because they are used to the images
that are used on the front cover. The
colours used are bright such as greens and purples this is because I believe
that colours would stand out more to those younger than colours such as black
and whites all over would. I used different fonts to show different sizes of
fonts, some of the writing is big to show which titles are more important than
others and ensure that the audience reads the most important parts. The
language used is quite formal but direct this will ensure that the readers will
relate to what is written as it is not too formal because those reading it are
young which means the magazine needs to be appealing and fun for the pupils to
show interest.
4) Who would be the audience for your media product?
4) Who would be the
audience for your media product?
The target for my
media product are those pupils of Sacred Heart High school but due to Sacred
Heart being an girls school the language used such as “she” is throughout the
magazine because this is who it is aimed at. This is aimed at pupils so the
images used refer to those of the school so that the readers can relate to the
images being used.
3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
3) What kind of
media institution might distribute your media product and why?
I choose IPC
Media to distribute my media product as I believed they were best suited to
reach my target audience. This is because they use the media when distributing
there magazines I believe this would be
best to use because the target audience are pupils who are in school which
suggests they would much prefer magazine to read through mobile phones and
other devices. Although IPC main target audience is usually women. I believe
that through my magazine this would mean they would appeal to a larger target
audience and would not be such a niche market magazine anymore. This also has a
great amount of experience when publishing different types of magazines because
there such a high profile Media Company. I chose not to go with other media
institutions such as Bauer, although this media institution has a lot of
experience as they have produced more than 570 magazines they only had a strong
focus for the “weekly women magazines” which suggests they wouldn’t be
interested in a market for pupils of a secondary school.
2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?
2 How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
The social group for my magazine are
pupils from sacred Heart High school, this media product represent this through
the images of the uniform being worn and the images of different places around
the school. This represents these social groups as those who go to school and
want to learn. This is also shown through different examples of what the school
offers there pupils.
1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
The layout of my
magazine cover for school follows the convention of how a reader reads a
magazine (From the top left to the bottom right) this is why the main stories
are to the left of the page. The main stories are all linked together to make
it easier for the reader to view and decided where to read. The photos are laid
out on the centre of the page; this is because the pictures are the most
important part to make readers choose this magazine as it is eye catching. The
main headline is in the corner left page because, the viewer s need to be able
to see the title of the magazine to see what they are actually going to
read. I added a barcode to the bottom
right of the magazine this ensures that the magazine has all the elements that
a professional magazine has traditionally. I also added page numbers so the
readers find it easier to find the key sections in the magazines that are the
most important parts of the magazine which I want the viewers to read. Some of
the images where cropped to fit with the other images that where put onto the
magazine these where cropped through the use of photo shop.
